Pilgrim’s Renewable Natural Gas Project Is Equivalent of Taking 1,400 Cars Off the Road

Through anaerobic digestion technology, the Pilgrim’s Sumter, S.C., facility can capture enough methane biogas to produce electricity and hot water for 500 to 700 households.

This poultry processing facility is one example of how Pilgrim’s demonstrates its commitment to improving the efficiency of our operations and minimizing our environmental footprint. In 2016, our Sumter facility partnered with global waste solutions company, Brightmark, to initiate a renewable natural gas (RNG) project.

Through this project, we continue to create a number of environmental operational efficiencies, including preventing the release of over 6,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions annually due to the RNG and anaerobic digester capabilities at the facility – equal to taking more than 1,400 cars off the road each year. The on-site anaerobic digester also allows waste methane to be captured and used to produce electricity and hot water for the facility, as well as recycles all wastewater, allowing for efficient resource recovery and cost savings.
